Surfing Mum Takes Alps by Storm, Inspires Thriving Climbing Community

Published Wed 27 Sep 2023

In the picturesque Alpine city of Chur, nestled in the heart of Switzerland, one remarkable story of community and adventure has emerged, sparked by the spirit of Surfing Mums. Coco, a former member of the Surfing Mums from Perth, found herself longing for the sense of camaraderie and freedom she had experienced with the group upon returning to Chur. Her journey would ultimately lead to the creation of a thriving climbing community in the Swiss Alps.

Feeling a bit isolated and yearning for the close-knit bonds she had forged with her fellow Surfing Mums, Coco, along with another adventurous Mum named Sandra, decided to take a leap of faith. They believed that the principles of community and shared passion that had flourished within Surfing Mums could be adapted to a completely different landscape—the majestic Swiss Alps.

Coco and Sandra recognized that climbing, much like surfing, offered physical and mental challenges that not only pushed individuals to grow but also fostered a profound sense of togetherness. With unwavering determination, they embarked on a mission to bring this vision to life.

Their journey began with the creation of a website and an Instagram page, followed by finding a suitable climbing centre and spreading the word at local climbing and family centres. Their message was clear and compelling: they invited Mums and Dads to join them in the exhilarating world of climbing while benefiting from the support and understanding of a close-knit group.

The Chur Climbing community's mission was to strike a harmonious balance between conquering the heights of the Swiss Alps and fulfilling their responsibilities as parents. Just like their surfing counterparts, they recognized that life's adventures are best enjoyed with kindred spirits who comprehend and champion their passions. What started as a modest endeavour has now gained significant momentum, with the group convening weekly.

Amongst the members, there is a professional climber, a father, who generously shares his expertise, teaching and guiding the other Mums and Dads in the group. This mentoring role mirrors the invaluable support and encouragement that Coco fondly remembers receiving from Elke Seppanen and Anna Davis, the Perth coordinators.

Coco's journey, from the waves of Australia to the Swiss Alps, is a testament to the power of inspiration and the adaptability of shared philosophies. It serves as a reminder that the love for adventure knows no bounds and that nurturing supportive communities can lead to transformative experiences. Whether they're riding waves or scaling mountain peaks, these communities illustrate that with the right mindset and a strong support network, anything is possible.

In Coco's own words: "Thank you so much for being such a beautiful community and giving me and my kids a home in Australia. I don't know what this time would have been without you guys. Thank you so much for everything."
