Surfing Mums News

So much has happened since I last wrote a newsletter I don’t know where to begin. But since most of you are mothers with limited time I’ll keep it short and sweet. Read on to find out what we have been up to…

Surfing Mums on TV

“Surfing Mums is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life.”

Jacqui Byron Bay Surfing Mum getting in trouble with her husband on national television

We couldn’t believe it but an actual film crew came from Channel 10 and filmed us mums at the Pass doing what we love most; hanging out with the kids at the beach in between surfs. They found it news worthy and we enjoyed ourselves!  I have uploaded the entire segment on youtube for those of you who missed out on seeing us in action. You can find the link on the Surfing Mums homepage under the ‘what’s hot’ column. www.surfingmums.com

New Groups

Surfing Mums groups have been popping up all over like mushrooms in a field. The newest groups are at Tweed Heads (they recently boasted front page pictures on the Tweed local paper), Albany (who got rained out on their first meet) and our Eastern Suburbs in Sydney group has been going gangbusters! Check the group news section of the webpage to see what everyone has been up to. http://www.surfingmums.com/groupnews.html

I am looking for a group coordinator for Manly if anyone is interested please contact me at Vanessa@surfingmums.com

“How lucky are we to be surfers? How lucky are we to go down, as a daily part of our lives, to the beach on a fall afternoon and watch people glide across green faces? How lucky are we, then, to paddle out and become one of those people?”

Surfing Mums Inc. News

Firstly I must apoligise for not keeping the Surfing Mums Newsletter up to date with the promised quarterly news letters. Once again there has been a massive period of growth for Surfing Mums with the formation of the incorporation. We are now a real not for profit association and a sports club for mothers who surf! Who would ever of thought a year a half ago that we would come so far! Thanks to all the mums involved for making it happen, it wasn’t easy but we got there in the end.

Surfing Mums Media

“Now we meet every week for a surf. Its great”

Leanne Bonello Eastern Suburbs Surfing Inc Group Coordinator tells the Sunday Telegraph in December of last year.

You wouldn’t know it but it was this small article in the Sunday Telegraph that kicked off a fury of media attention for Surfing Mums. Suddenly radio stations were calling every day for radio interviews from as far a field as New Zealand, and TV shows such as Current Affair and Channel 10 news wanted to feature us. The Current Affair ended up having some tragedy to cover so we didn’t make it on but we gained a lot of exposure from around the country. Our most recent appearance was on the Channel 9 surf travel show ‘Surfari’ and Channel 10 Gold Coast news. You can check out all the media attention on the homepage or this link -  http://www.surfingmums.com/SurfingMumsMedia.htm

Membership

With all the changes to Surfing Mums Inc check out what it all means with the set of F.A.Q. on the webpage on this link- http://www.surfingmums.com/Membership.htm

The most obvious being that we now have a membership fee of $30 per a year. This helps cover the costs of our new public liability insurance and first aid kits and training for group coordinators as well as some fun activities in the future!

 Sponsorship

We couldn’t do everything with out the help of our sponsors and our newest addition is Global Surf Industries, truly helping us feel that ‘life is better when you surf’ by donating 5 boards for us to use as fundraising. For a full list of our sponsors check out- http://www.surfingmums.com/Sponsors.htm

Getting back into the water is the hardest thing for most of us. Its cheap therapy as well bonding times with other mums” Tina Donovan

Hive Swimwear

I wanted to give some back ground and more info on the Hive Swimmers as we are running a competition on the web site for the most embarrassing moment you have experienced while surfing and losing some inadequately designed swimwear!

Hive Swimwear is the inspiration of Noosa Heads local girls and avid surfer Katrina Hogg (better known as Kat). With a wealth of experience in the surf industry, Kat’s background is broad and includes modeling, surf coaching, surf school and surf travel company manager, surf retail assistant and all round active sports woman.

Being surrounded by a strong female posse, Kat became aware of a need in the market for functional yet fashionable swimwear. After repeatedly hearing comments from friends and retail customers regarding the lack of suitable active swimwear, she set about creating a range that addresses function and style.

Hive swimwear has been manufactured using the highest grade lycra and elastics and has been extensively tested in a wide range of ocean conditions. The garments

Welcome to the first Surfing Mums newsletter!

In my quest to establish a global surfing mums community I decided to start a news letter to keep all the mums in touch with what’s happening with all our groups.

The internet has revolutionized the way we communicate and now it is possible to establish a virtual ‘on-line’ community as well as our real life communities in each different location. So Surfing Mums can now not only operate in each distinct location but unite mums from all over the world in a web based community.

The newsletter is starting out a bit sparse but I’m sure it will improve over time! Enjoy and don’t worry if it seems to jump around a bit,

Welcome to Surfing Mums

Surfing Mums has reached the big five in terms of how many groups have formed. We now even stretch across to the West Coast of Australia with the Perth group starting its first official meeting in May.

There are now groups in Manly, Cronulla, the Central Coast, Byron Bay and Perth.

There has been a lot of interest from NZ since we appeared in the new surfing girl magazine Curl so I think they might be starting up a group soon.

have been made to fit firmly, are fully lined and offer increased durability and prolonged life.

The range features innovative styles and is in line with the latest designs seen in the very hip European summer this year. The colours are bright and fun and the prints combine layered simple shapes with a retro feel.

The tops comprise stylish binded straps that cross over at the back and provide a comfortable yet functional and secure fit. There are 3 styles available over 2 printed fabrics and 2 plain block colours. The range is small but is very versatile and suitable for many different sizes and body shapes.

Hive Swimwear is attracting great interest and receiving immense support from competitive surfers. Hive will appear in the hottest street fashion magazines and will surely create a buzz when it hits the press this summer.

Check out Kats range on www.hiveswimwear.com to see her range. I have personally tried out a pair and they are as good as they sound.
